The Vince Carter Sanctuary is a Level II Residential Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Treatment Provider located 20 miles north of Daytona Beach, FL. We are licensed by the State of Florida’s Department of Children and Families (DCF), and are a CARF Accredited adult residential treatment provider.
PHILOSOPHY
Our Treatment Program's philosophy is that addiction is a complex disease damaging the addict physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually. Because of the holistic nature of the illness, the optimal treatment addresses these needs along with others to support recovery.
The disease model states addiction is a disease that is primary, preventable, progressive, treatable, and often fatal. Recent biologically oriented research suggests a genetic component to alcohol and other addictions and points to physiological changes in the brain that result from drug use.
The element of spirituality is very general and not specific to any religion. Spirituality is seen as the sense of being part of and responsible to a Power greater than the individual self. Three of the main spiritual principles are honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness. This spiritual component implies that healing of one's life that needs to take place, and abstinence from the drug is just the first step on the path to recovery.
With the 12-step philosophy as a foundation of our Residential Treatment Program, three science-based treatment approaches are used: Motivational Enhancement, Cognitive/Behavioral, and the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) model. Motivational Enhancement addresses the varied levels of willingness and readiness to engage change, Cognitive Behavioral addresses the distorted thinking and dysfunctional behaviors involved in addiction, and the CRAFT model recognizes the strong environmental factors influencing both substance use and abstinence. This model utilizes family, social, recreational and vocational influences to compliment treatment.
VISION
The vision of the Sanctuary is to develop, promote and model a healthy, drug-free environment of change, dedicated to the provision of high quality clinical treatment services to chemically dependent adults and their families. Within this environment of change, clients and their families can experience the therapeutic process as a guided journey through a seamless continuum of care, always flexible and responsive to their changing needs. The Sanctuary's vision commits us, among other things, to national leadership in our field and the utilization of science based approaches. The VCS Residential Treatment Program supports this vision by adhering to clinically researched models of therapy.
PROGRAM GOALS
Long-range goals of treatment for clients with substance abuse disorders include the achievement of abstinence, reduction in the frequency of relapses, and rehabilitation to a life of effective behavior physically, psychologically, socially and spiritually.
INDIVIDUALIZED TREATMENT
Our comprehensive treatment programs are tailored for individualized care. This enables us to create a personalized treatment schedule for each client. A thorough medical evaluation will occur with every admission. Medication management, psychological testing and psychiatric evaluation and treatment are available when indicated.
Treatment plans are evaluated on a regular basis by each client’s recovery team. Recovery teams primarily consist of the client’s physician, primary therapist, family therapist, activities therapist, case manager and program director. This way we are able to offer each client the maximum benefit from their treatment experience.
Co-occurring issues such as trauma and abuse, personality disorders, codependency and other addictions are assessed and addressed as part of the master treatment plan. The result is an individualized treatment program. Our counseling program focuses on many areas of a person’s life, ranging from psychological and emotional issues, social and family relationships, personal and professional goals, health and fitness, diet and nutrition, spirituality, and life stressors, to independent living skills.
DIDACTIC GROUP THERAPY
Didactic group therapy is provided for the purpose of helping clients eliminate problematic substance use. It is less interactive in nature than a Therapeutic Group and may include topical lectures, educational videos or other one-way presentations, and large group discussions. Didactic group sessions are conducted by a variety of disciplines including physicians, therapists, recovering persons, even our CEO.
COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES
Complementary and adjunctive therapies include Equine (Horse) Assisted Therapy, Dolphin (Cetacean) Therapy, Art Therapy, and therapeutic massage as needed. Some of these adjunctive services may involve an additional cost.
CLIENT'S PARTICIPATION IN TREATMENT PLANNING
Each client at the Vince Carter Sanctuary program participates in developing a written, comprehensive, and individualized treatment plan appropriate to the purpose and scope of the program and in accordance with the culture, gender, and life style differences of each client. The treatment plan is based on the current diagnostic impression and the individual strengths, needs, abilities and preferences of the client identified in the Intake Screening Assessment and the biopsychosocial assessments and summarized in a Diagnostic Summary. The client's participation in the development of his/her treatment plan is sought and documented in assessments, progress notes, treatment plan reviews, and the signing of treatment plans, treatment plan reviews, and treatment plan revisions.
FAMILY PROGRAM
Family is considered an essential part of the treatment process. Addictions and behavioral disorders do not exist in isolation. The entire family is affected and suffers greatly. They often feel helpless and live in fear and anxiety. For those family members who feel they have tried everything to help their loved one, this program offers an opportunity for hope, healing, and family reunification. Our Family Program is designed to bring awareness, understanding, and behavioral change for clients, families, and significant others. Through education, group process, and experiential exercises, participants learn how to change unhealthy communication and behavioral patterns, and strengthen family and personal relationships. Individual family sessions are part of the overall treatment process. If it isn’t possible for a family member or spouse to participate in person, technology is available to perform conference calls for long-distant participation. For those wishing to participate on-site twice monthly, the Vince Carter Sanctuary also offers free room and board to immediate family members during an extended weekend for our residential family therapy program.
AFTERCARE PROGRAM
Each client receives an individualized aftercare plan with a continuum of treatment services for ongoing support following the completion of residential treatment. An individual leaving treatment often returns to an environment where they face a multitude of relapse "triggers". At the Vince Carter Sanctuary, we recognize it is essential for client success to have a comprehensive detailed aftercare plan. The development of this plan begins at admission. Our aftercare staff, in collaboration with the treatment team, gathers personal and clinical information toward the establishment of this final discharge plan. Our aftercare coordinator will also discuss additional options, such as a "sober escort" or "recovery guide" to assure you are transported safely home.
NO-FEE Early Intervention Relapse Prevention (1st year)
